Name: Victor Brauner
Year of Birth & Death: (1903 - 1966)
Biography: Brauner was raised in Romania, where he became a student of magic. This later influenced his work. He attended the Bucharest School of Fine Arts, and then soon after, founded the 75 HP review with Ilarie Voronca. In the review, he introduced a new expressional means called "picto-poetry." He ended up in Paris, and by 1933, joined the surrealist movement. After an exhibit at the Galerie Pierre in 1934, he went back to Romania. In 1938, he returned to Paris, lost his eye in an accident he knew was going to happen, and began his "Chimacras Period." This included the twilight scenes of Psychological Space, and The Inner Life (1939). He later did magic-inspired fumages in the Hautes-Alpes. He spent 1947 experimenting in his Paris studio. In 1948 he left the surrealist group and began his meditations on nature, which dominated his paintings until his death.
